Privacy Policy

CalBud is a calorie and macronutrient tracking app built to respect your privacy. All of your data stays on your device. We don't run a backend, we don't have user accounts, and we don't collect, sell, or transmit your personal data to anyone.

What we store, where it lives

Everything you log — meals, weights, water, AI chat history, your profile — is saved only on your iPhone, in the app's private SwiftData store. We never upload it.

If you uninstall the app, all of this data is deleted.

What we do NOT do

• No accounts, no sign-up, no login
• No user tracking, fingerprinting, or profiling
• No backend servers receiving your data
• No data sharing with anyone

Advertising

CalBud displays occasional interstitial ads provided by Google AdMob. Google may use device identifiers and ad interaction data in accordance with Google's Privacy Policy. We do not share any of your health data, food logs, or personal information with Google.

You can permanently remove all ads with a one-time In-App Purchase.

Apple HealthKit

If you choose to connect Apple Health (entirely opt-in):

• We read your Active Energy Burned and body weight to refine your daily calorie target.
• We write the meals you log (calories, protein, carbs, fat) and water entries to Apple Health, so other apps and your daily summary stay in sync.
• This data flows through Apple's HealthKit framework, which is sandboxed on your device. It never reaches us.

You can revoke access any time in Settings → Health → Data Access & Devices → CalBud.

Anonymous analytics

CalBud uses TelemetryDeck to collect anonymous, aggregate usage statistics — things like which features are popular, where users drop off in onboarding, and which app versions are in use. This helps us improve the app.

TelemetryDeck is privacy-first by design:

• No personal data is collected — no device IDs, no IP addresses, no names, no health data.
• Users are counted with a rolling anonymous hash that resets monthly. Even TelemetryDeck cannot identify or track individual users.
• Data is stored in the EU (Frankfurt, Germany) and is GDPR-compliant without requiring a consent banner.
• The SDK is open source and auditable.

We never send your meals, weight, water logs, chat messages, or any health data to TelemetryDeck. Only anonymous feature-usage signals.

Network requests

CalBud makes the following network requests:

1. Open Food Facts (world.openfoodfacts.org) — when you scan a barcode. We send only the barcode number (a public product ID — no personal data) and receive nutrition information for that product.
2. TelemetryDeck (nom.telemetrydeck.com) — anonymous usage signals as described above.
3. Google AdMob (googlemobileads.google.com) — to serve interstitial ads. No health or food data is sent.

You can use the app with zero barcodes scanned and the core experience works fully offline (analytics signals are queued and sent when connectivity is available).

AI features

The AI assistant and AI food search use Apple's on-device Foundation Models framework. Your prompts and the model's responses are processed entirely on your iPhone. No prompt, no message, no food log ever leaves your device for AI features.

Notifications

If you enable the daily reminder in Profile, we use Apple's local notifications to remind you at the time you choose. The notification is scheduled on your device and never reaches any server.

Children's privacy

CalBud is not directed at children under 13. We don't knowingly collect any data from anyone, so this is more of a formality.

Changes to this policy

If the policy ever changes (for example if we add a Pro tier with optional sync), the updated version will appear here and a brief in-app note will let you know.
